Papers of Lorenzo Dow Sargent, native of Windham, N.H., Overseer of the Atlantic Mills in Lawrence, Mass., and Colonel of the 41st Mass. Infantry (later the 3rd Mass. Cavalry) in the Civil War. Most of the papers concern Sargent's service in Louisiana and Virginia during the war, including a contemporary account of the Battle of Winchester, Sept. 19, 1864. Correspondents or signers of documents include John A. Andrew, William Schouler, and Philip H. Sheridan.

Sheridan claimed he was born in Albany in the State of New York, the third child of six of John and Mary Meenagh Sheridan, Irish Catholic immigrants from the parish of Killinkere in County Cavan, Ireland.
